Horse Hair & Lavender Seeds
If you saw me today in my mud-stained jeans, pony tail and makeup-free face you'd never guess that once upon a time I was a Toronto girl with a digital communications company.
After navigating the demanding changes of technology, I felt the calling of the west. I packed my things and moved ready to try something completely different. I enrolled myself in a Wilderness Guiding and Wrangling School.
I learned to pack horses, chop wood, shoot a gun and the basics of wilderness first aid. I also met the man who would eventually become my husband although neither of us knew it at the time.
For a few months, I traded communications contracts for horses, mountains and life beyond cell service. It was tough, physical work and I loved every minute of it.
Each morning I would walk out alone to find the horses, wondering what on earth I was doing by myself in grizzly country.
Those seasons taught me the beauty of living in tune with nature, trusting my resourcefulness and finding courage in doing hard things.
Then life handed me another plot twist. After years of pouring my heart and soul into my career, I was let go. I found myself at a crossroads this time in midlife.
That Christmas, my husband Carmen gave me a few packages of lavender seeds. I planted them and the lavender took off sparking something in me, too.
I began experimenting with botanical infusions and creating skincare for my own changing skin. Curiosity became a passion, eventually leading me to earn an Advanced Diploma in Organic Cosmetic Science.
What felt like an ending became the beginning of Cowgirl’s Friend, a skincare and lifestyle brand for women navigating the changes of midlife with thoughtful care, genuine support and a good laugh along the way.
I’ve rarely known exactly what I was doing at the start. I’ve just stayed open, learned as I went and followed the trail wherever it led taking a few wrong turns along the way.
That, to me, is the cowgirl spirit.
Starting over doesn’t mean starting from scratch. We bring our wisdom, stories and hard-earned trail miles with us. This next chapter is our time to shine.
